Activity Description
To host a virtual or on site Hackathon, Celo provides a number of building blocks to empower everyone to run their own independent Hackathons. The possible areas of support from Celo Foundation is highlighted in orange below.
đź’ˇTheme & Ideation
The first step to every Hackathon is a theme. They are usually based on a Blockchain or a topic such as NFTs or Smart Contracts. Multiple themes can be divided into “tracks” for larger Hackathons. Celo themed Hackathons earn the largest point reward, followed by tracks.
Ideation is a period of creation for participants before they start any coding. During this time, participants think about what they want to build and the general steps to take. This helps define large milestones, responsibility division and keep teams on track for completion.
Ideation is not mandatory and often skipped in Hackathons, but Celo encourages Hackathon hosts to have mentors for an ideation period or even organise a “speed dating” session between business and finance students / institutions. If you would like to bring together another school for your Hackathon, we may be able to connect you.
🧑‍💻 Hacking together mentors, side events, swag and more
To keep your participants minds and body in shape for the Hackathon, many Hackathons provide food, side events, coding help and more.
For speakers to present on interesting and inspirational topics, take a look at Celo Speak. Celo is able to find Mentors if the request is made far enough in advance and the Hackathon is considered “large”.
For US institutions, Celo is also able provide some swag through an approval process by the events team.
đź’ŻÂ Judging & Prizes
Celo provides some base criteria by which final submissions are judged. You can find a template project evaluation plan below.
Celo is willing to provide the following packages for Celo themed Hackathons:
- 10k cUSD for large Hackathons of over 50 hackers
- 5k cUSD for small Hackathons with at least 20 participants
Recipients have full discretion of using the amount as they see fit but we encourage that half goes to prizes and half goes to Hackathon planning. Speak to us if you would like to offer non-financial prizes. For example, an opportunity to travel to Celo offices.
